Markus Allan Hoppus (b. March 15, 1972), better known as Mark Hoppus is a founding member of the pop punk band blink-182. He plays bass guitar, electric guitar, and does vocals. At the age of fifteen Hoppus got his first bass from his father after helping him paint his house. He moved to Ridgecrest, California to attend high school, where he played bass and sang with the band Pier 69, primarily covering songs by The Cure. He later moved to San Diego to continue his studies in college, where he met Tom Delonge (another blink-182 member) through his little sister, Anne Hoppus. Delonge was a friend of Anne's boyfriend, and constantly complained about wanting to join a band. She finally introduced Hoppus and Delonge in August 1992.

Hoppus and Delonge, with their friend, drummer Scott Raynor, decided to form a band in 1992. They were originally called "Blink", but an Irish techno band had that name and filed a case in court so they changed their band name to blink-182. In 1997, after the release of their fourth album Dude Ranch, Raynor left the band to go back to college and currently has the band's full support. He was soon replaced by Travis Barker of The Aquabats. Barker learned the entire setlist in about forty-five minutes before a show, and eventually became the band's full-time drummer.

Blink-182 has not broken up, but they are taking a break to "spend time with their families", says Delonge. Hoppus and Barker are now recording songs for their new band, Plus 44. It features the two of them and the female vocalist, Carol Heller.

The Billboard
Plus 44 is a new band consisting of Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker of Blink-182, Shane Gallagher of The Nervous Return and Craig Fairbaugh of The Mercy Killers. The group got it's name from the international dialing code to the UK, because it is where Mark and Travis first discussed doing the project.

"At first, we had the idea that it would have a lot of electronic influences, because by necessity we were recording on a computer. But then we bought this studio, and after we moved the band into here, the whole vibe changed. There's all kinds of stuff going on. Guitars mixed with keyboards, and electronic drums mixed with live drums. It's based on guitars and rhythms, and both Shane and Craig are great guitar players."

- Mark Hoppus (from MTV.com)

"If Blink was the daytime, Plus 44 is the nighttime. It's such a departure from Blink, but it's amazing. I play all the drums, but they're electronic drums, plus I play piano and keyboard on it. And I've been making beats for it. ... I am just going to keep working on stuff. Everything's A-plus."

When Your Heart Stops Beating (2006-2007)

As the projected release date started to draw in, speculation on the title of the band's debut album began to circulate. At first, it was believed that the album would be called Little Death which was later revealed to be one of the tracks of the album. Hoppus finally settled on When Your Heart Stops Beating. The song "Lycanthrope" was released on the +44 website in early September 2006. This was only the second song that fans had heard other than "No, It Isn't".

Later in September KROQ-FM played the title track of the forthcoming album. The band played their first show on September 7, 2006 at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood; Hoppus stated it was the first show he had performed in two years. The band followed this up by their second show and first ever UK performance at the London Astoria venue. Both shows were met with very encouraging reactions from fans, considering that at that time, only one completely recorded and mastered song, "When Your Heart Stops Beating" had been heard.

The album was released on November 14, 2006 in North America, November 13, 2006 in Europe, and November 11, 2006 in Australia.

During the shooting of the video for "When Your Heart Stops Beating", Travis Barker injured his arm, which was discovered weeks later after playing a whole European promo tour. This forced him to cancel drumming in the upcoming Australia and Europe tours. Gil Sharone filled in for him in these tours.

+44 then covered The Smashing Pumpkins' song "I Am One" for a MySpace tribute to the band and also participated in the iTunes Foreign Exchange. For this they covered Wir sind Helden's song "Guten Tag" with an English translation and Wir sind Helden covered "When Your Heart Stops Beating" in a German translation, entitled "Wenn Dein Herz zu Schlagen Aufhört".

In 2007, +44 set off on the Honda Civic Tour along with Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is..., Paul Wall, and Cobra Starship. During the tour they filmed themselves playing for the music video of their upcoming single "155". On this tour they began covering "Dammit", "The Rock Show" and "What's My Age Again?", all three by Blink-182

[edit] Second studio album (2007-present)

The first mention of +44 pulling out of their European festival and show appearances was on August 6, 2007. The music website NME then released the following statement from the band on August 8, 2007 with the official reason of studio commitments for their follow up to their 2006 debut, When Your Heart Stops Beating.

"We want to start writing new songs and we are really excited about the direction we have planned. So we're going into the studio instead of playing these few dates. We hope our fans will forgive us for the cancellation; in the end, this will make for an even better live show when we come back."

Hoppus later also revealed some information regarding the writing of the follow-up to their debut album. He stated:

"Now we are starting to write the next record. We've got a bunch of ideas; a studio full of stuff, microphones, and effects; and a soundboard from the 1970's. We're really excited to start putting together a new album."

On October 23, 2007, Hoppus stated that +44 had officially signed a deal with Interscope to start recording +44's second studio album.[5] On April 9th, Hoppus stated that the delay of the second studio album was due to the lack of funding by the label. On May 25, he also stated that the new +44 album was still in pre-production. He has been considering releasing demos of the songs on his website, but claims that label management might sue him.

On July 30, 2008, Metromix interviewed Barker where he explained about his solo record. When asked about +44, he stated:

"We're going to be a lot more proactive about it after I get my record finished and Mark [Hoppus] finishes producing the two records he's doing this year."
